The History of Access Consciousness: How the Modality Began

Every modality has a beginning. Here is where Access Consciousness came from, and how a small set of tools travelled to more than 170 countries.

To understand any practice, it helps to know where it came from. Access Consciousness has a fairly recent and well-documented history, which is part of what makes it approachable.

The 1990s beginnings

Access Consciousness was founded by Gary Douglas in the United States in the early 1990s. The early work centred on a hands-on technique that became known as Access Bars — a series of points on the head that, when lightly touched, seemed to help people feel calmer and more open.

A second voice

In the years that followed, Dr. Dain Heer joined and helped expand the work, adding classes, body processes and the verbal tools that many people now use daily. Together they shaped Access into something teachable and repeatable rather than personality-dependent.

Going global

Over three decades the practice spread through word of mouth and trained facilitators. Today it is offered in over 170 countries, with thousands of certified practitioners and a large catalogue of classes ranging from a single day to intensive multi-day formats.

  • Early 1990s — the foundational tools and Access Bars take shape.
  • 2000s — classes, body processes and verbal tools are formalised.
  • 2010s–2020s — worldwide growth and thousands of certified facilitators.

Why the history matters

Knowing the timeline helps separate the practice from the myths around it. It is not ancient or secret; it is a modern, evolving body of self-help tools. In India, facilitators like Bhavesh Sidhpura offer these same sessions and classes locally, in Pune and on request across the country.

If the story interests you, the most direct way to understand it is to feel one of the tools for yourself.

Curious to feel it, not just read about it?

A first session in Pune, India is a calm, no-pressure way to experience this work for yourself.
